AWR Acquires Simulation Software Firm

El Segundo-based AWR, a developer of electronic design automation software, has acquired a Wisconsin firm developing RF and microwave simulation software, the company disclosed this morning. AWR said it has acquired Simulation Technology and Applied Research, Inc. (STAAR), which is based in Mequon, Wisconsin. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. AWR said that STAAR will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the firm, and remain in Wisconsin. STAAR develops 3D, parallelized FEM tools for electromagnetic simulation of RF and microwave components and subsystems; the software is used in conjunction with AWR's own high frequency EDA tools. The firm said STAAR's software is being used for analyzing EM fields in monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs). Both companies develop software used at very high frequency designs, where electromagnetic effects are much more pronounced that in standard circuit design.
