Broadcom Open Sources Codecs

Irvine-based Broadcom is releasing a family of its voice codecs into open source this morning, the firm said, in an effort to eliminate royalties and licensing fees required by its competitors. According to Broadcom, it is releasing its BroadVoice family of voice codecs royalty-free and without any licensing fees, and will release the source code to those codecs under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), version 2.1. The codecs run on Broadcom's cable, DSL, and voIP systems-on-a-chip, and are used in voice-over-cable, voice-over-DSL, Either IP, and VoIP phones and clients.
