Cyber Monday Breaks Spending Record, Hits $1.25 Billion

Online shoppers drove Cyber Monday to a new record, spending $1.25 billion, in the heaviest U.S. online spending day in history, according to the latest numbers from comScore. comScore said Tuesday afternoon that shopping on Cyber Monday was a 22 percent increase over sales last year, driven by 10 million people doing their shopping online Monday. comScore said the sales also mark only the second day on record to surpass a billion dollars in sales. For the holiday season so far, that brings the total spent online to $15 billion, up 15 percent from last year. Cyber Monday has traditionally been the largest online shopping day all year, driven by after Thanksgiving deals, and access to high speed Internet connections by consumers at work. Consumers continued to use their work computers for their shopping spree this year, with 50.2 percent of sales online coming from work computers. Black Friday also was a good day for online retailers this year, with $816M in sales, up 26 percent from last year.
