FreedomPop Launches Tablets

Los Angeles-based free phone and data service provider FreedomPop is expanding out its service, saying this week that it has started offering up iPad Mini and Samsung Tab 3 tablets on the service. According to FreedomPop, the service will also let users with existing LTE support move their tablets to the service, which will provide 500MB of LTE data, 200 voice minutes, and 500 texts a month for free. FreedomPop said its new tablets will cost $319 for the iPad mini, and $199 for the Samsung Tab 3. FreedomPop offers up a combined, phone- and data- plan which includes a unique phone number, free calls, and text under certain limits; the company previously only offered up its data plans for mobile phones. FreedomPop has been gambling on low user acquisition costs, low bandwidth costs, and users upgrading to higher, premium plans for its business model. The company is backed by Mangrove Capital, DCM, and Atomico.
