Gevo Licenses UCLA Technology

Researchers at UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have licensed technology to Pasadena-based biofuels startup Gevo, UCLA said Wednesday, but did not disclose financial details of the exclusive technology licensing deal. UCLA said that Gevo has licensed technology for producing next-generation biofuels through genetically modified Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, through a royalty-bearing license. Gevo is a high profile, venture funded startup which has received investments from Khosla Ventures and Virgin Green Fund. The technology was developed by UCLA professor James Liao, postdoctoral fellow Shota Atsumi, and visiting processor Taizo Hanai. Liao has joined Gevo's scientific advisory board.
