Gizmo Project Makes Landline Calls Free

San Diego-based SIPphone, which maintains the Gizmo open source Voice-over-IP calling software, said today that it is making calling to landlines and mobile phones in sixty countries free. The firm said that active Gizmo Project users can now make unlimited calling using the company's Internet calling software. SIPphone said that the program includes China, the United States, Brazil, Japan, UK, and other countries. The move comes as VoIP leader Skype recently rolled out a free calling program in the United States in an attempt to build market share here. The Gizmo Project is based on the open source SIP Voice-over-IP protocol. SIPphone is headed by MP3.com's Michael Robertson.
