Gordon Moore Gives $25.4M to Caltech

Pasadena-based Caltech announced that it has been awarded a $25.4M grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to create an initiative for nanoscale systems. The Nanoscale Systems Initiative will focus on creating extremely tiny devices for electronic systems. The school had founded the Kavli Naonscience Institute earlier this year with a $7.5M grant. The institute will go beyond the area of nanodevice engineering into nanobiotechnology, where nanodevices are merged with molecular and cellular living systems; and nanophotonics, where new material technology and nanofabrication are used to develop devices such as waveguides and microlasers. The school said that the funds would be used for creating new laboratories and equipment. Gordon Moore is the founder of Intel, and who Moore's Law was named for.
