Novatel Test WiMAX MiFi Prototype, Links with Qualcomm

San Diego-based Novatel Wireless, a developer of wireless data cards, said today that it has completed over the air testing of a new, 4G-WiMAX enabled MiFi mobile hotspot product. The firm said that the prototype uses Beceem's 4G WiMax chips, and showed 18Mbps speeds with a theoretical capacity of 30Mbps downlink and 10Mbps uplink capability. The firm did not say if or when it would be releasing a WiMAX version of its MiFi mobile hotspot product, which allows consumers to connect PCs to a local hotspot via cellular connections. Separately, Novatel said it is tapping Qualcomm for a embedded, machine to machine (M2M) module, Qualcomm's Wearable Mobile Device 1X and 1X EV-DO Rev A. Qualcomm said the deal will enable development of very small form factor devices. Financial details of that deal were not disclosed.
