Qualcomm Completes GPS Testing for WCDMA

San Diego-based Qualcomm announced that it has completed testing of its GPS-enabled gpsOne location technology on WCDMA (UMTS), GSM, and GPRS networks. The testing completion validates that the company's technology for wireless location-based services works with major infrastructure vendors, including Alcatel, NEC, Nortel, and Spirent. The company said that the company's GPS solution is the first for major 3G and 2G wireless technologies. Qualcomm is one of several companies developing GPS-enabled chipsets targeted at location-based services. Location-based services are an emerging area of the market which uses a user's location (via cell phone) to provide geographically relevant information, such as local services, advertising, and tracking.
