Qualcomm Supports Chinese Satellite Network

San Diego-based Qualcomm said Thursday that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, has added support for the Chinese BeiDou Satellite Navigation System within its products, in a collaboration with Samsung. According to Qualcomm, the supports enhances location precision in smartphones and tablets in China, by incorporating data from the Chinese satellite network into existing data from other, satellite networks. Qualcomm's chips and technology currently use data from the more well known GPS and GLONASS navigation satellite networks. China's BeiDou satellite network is currently under construction, and primarily covers China and surrounding countries via a number of geostationary orbit satellites. Qualcomm said its effort is the first, commercial product to take advantage of the satellite network.
