RealD Debuts New Technology On The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Los Angeles-based 3D projection technology developer RealD has launched a new image enhancement product and technology, which it is calling TrueImage. RealD said the new product--which provides 2D and 3D image enhancement, and eliminates digital and film capture related artifacts--was first used in the post production of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. RealD said its new technology provides higher quality imagery in films, which is more detailed and "lifelike". RealD said its technology uses "millions of data points per pixel" to correct for digital artifacts, increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. RealD said it plans to make the technology available for consumer applications, after its launch in the cinema space.
