Archos Receives Strategic Investment From EchoStar
Irvine-based Archos, the US-arm of ARCHOS SA, said today that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Echostar Communications to develop portable digital video recorder technology for EchoStar. EchoStar is investing approximately $9M in Archos as part of the deal. The companies said that Archos will provide EchoStar with portable digital video recorders that can directly transfer video content from DISH Network set-top boxes. The alliance is similar to the exclusive deal that DVR maker Tivo has with EchoStar competitor DirecTV. Tivo's growth in recent quarters has primarily been through sales tied to the DirecTV satellite service.
