    BakBone Encrypts Backup Data

San Diego-based backup software provider BakBone software has introduced new encryption capabilities to its software. The company said that its NetVault Encryption Application Plug-in Module enables encryption of backup data at database, file server, or desktops. The encryption solutions supports the CAST 128 encryption algorithm. The move comes as companies are increasingly looking to encrypt the backup data for protection against lost or stolen tapes, and as reports of the Bank of America losing tapes containing the account information for millions of federal workers, and just last week with City National Bank losing tapes containing Social Security numbers and account numbers. Most IT managers have not used encryption capabilities in backup solutions before due to the negative impact on backup throughput by the encryption process.
