Bird Offers Up Discounts To Low Income Users

Venice-based, last-mile scooter transportation company Bird has rolled out a brand new program which will offer up discounted rates to low income users, saying it will eliminate its $1 base fee per ride for anyone who qualifies for a state or federal assistance program. Those users will still pay the normal 15 cents per minute rate for using the company's scooters. According to Bird, the new program, One Bird, is aimed at helping to improve mobility and increase access to employment opportunities for underserved communities. Bird said riders will spend about $3 on a 20-minute commute to work versus the $10 or more that a rideshare for the same trip can cost. Bird said users looking to take advantage of the program need to email proof of enrollment in a program such as CalFresh, Medicaid, SNAP, or a discounted utility bill to one@bird.co, with approvals taking two to three days.
