Blu-ray Pilots Manufacturing Process

The Blu-ray Disc Association, which is competing against HD-DVD for acceptance as the next generation DVD format, announced today that the format is now ready for manufacturing with a complete disc manufacturing process. The group said that a new spin-coating process has been piloted in Torrance, California by Panasonic and Origin Electric. The process is used to apply a 0.1mm layer used in the Blu-ray Disc format, and for replication and mass production of discs. The association said that the combination of that technology and other partners will bring mass replication facilities for the BD-ROM disk this year, with a pilot line for BD disc manufacturing set up in July at Technicolor. The Blu-ray format supports up to 50GB on a double layer disc at the launch of its DVD format.
