Irvine-based Broadcom announced this morning that the firm has shipped a new series of Ethernet switching chips. Broadcom claims the new BCM56840 series are the "world's fastest" single-chip Ethernet switching devices. The company said that the new devices can be used to provide up to 64 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, or 16 ports of 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and are targeted at developers of top-of-rack switches, blade switches, and modular switches. Broadcom reported that the new switch chips are sampling to its early access customers.
