Frontiers in Science & Technology - Special Presentation: A dramatic look into James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge. CONNECT. A dramatic look into
James Cameron's Deepsea Challenge with expedition
lead scientist Douglas Bartlett. During the winter and spring of 2012 the Deepsea Challenge Expedition with National Geographic Explorer in Residence, James Cameron, conducted submersible and lander operations in the New Britain Trench (down to ~8.2 km depth) and the deepest point on Earth, the Mariana Trench (down to ~10.9 km depth). This expedition marked the first manned mission to the Challenger Deep in more than half a century. Dr. Douglas Bartlett served as the team's chief scientist and microbiologist on this headline expedition in June and is currently analyzing samples taken from this record breaking solo dive to gain greater insight into how organisms thrive in such extreme depths of the ocean.
