lead scientist Douglas Bartlett. During the winter and spring of 2012 the Deepsea Challenge Expedition with National Geographic Explorer in Residence, James Cameron, conducted submersible and lander operations in the New Britain Trench (down to ~8.2 km depth) and the deepest point on Earth, the Mariana Trench (down to ~10.9 km depth). This expedition marked the first manned mission to the Challenger Deep in more than half a century.
