    Chipcon Acquires Figure 8 Wireless


    San Diego-based Figure 8 Wireless has been acquired by Norway-based Chipcon AS, a provider of low power, low data rate RF ICs. Figure 8 is a provider of firmware and software for the new Zigbee and 802.15.4 wireless standard. Terms were not disclosed in the all-stock transaction. The combined company will focus on low power wireless monitoring and control applications, with Figure 8 Wireless as a wholly owned subsidiary. Joe Markee, president of Figure 8 Wireless will continue as head of Figure 8, and Don Sturek, CTO of Figure 8 will become CTO, Software of Chipcon. Figure 8 is backed by Avalon Ventures, Cardinal Venture Capital, Freescale Semiconductor, and the Viterbi Group.
