Department of Defense Awards $150M In Grants
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded major, basic research grants to 20 universities, worth $150.6 million over the next five years. The DoD said yesterday that the grants will cover 26 topic areas in basic science and engineering, part of the DoD's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program. In Southern California, the California Institute of Technology received three grants, the University of Southern California received two, and UC Santa Barbara received one grant. The projects covered by the grants at Caltech included image recognition, mechanics of marine structures, and embedded systems. The projects at USC included bioengineered fuel cells and pattern recognition. The grant at UCSB was for a multifunctional chip for reconfigurable information processing. The DoD said that each award averages about $1M per year for the research.
