Desert Wins Over Robotic Race Vehicles

DARPA's robotic vehicle race from Barstow to Vegas was held Saturday. Final results for DARPA's Grand Challenge (www.grandchallenge.org) resulted in every vehicle entering the contest being disabled by Mile 7 of the 142 mile course. Preliminary results show that of all the vehicles in the race, Carnegie Mellon University's Red Team made it farthest at 7.4 miles; then by Thousand Oaks-based SciAutonics II (www.sciautonics.com) which went 6.7 miles. SciAutonics I managed to run 0.75 miles but lost the route. Pasadena-based Team Caltech (team.caltech.edu) travelled 1.3 miles. Westlake Village-based Axion Racing got stuck at the starting area, and Palos Verdes High School Road Warriors hit a wall in the start area.
