EdgeCast Joins Google, Others On DNS Effort

Santa Monica-based content deliver network provider EdgeCast Networks said today that it has joined with OpenDNS and Google, as well as a number of other CDNs, to speed up the handling of domain name system (DNS) request on the Internet. According to EdgeCast, the support for the new standard--which embeds a portion of a user's IP address into DNS requests--will help speed up Internet access for users. DNS is the protocol which is used by computers to translate web addresses into actual Internet IP addresses. EdgeCast said that the support will help CDNS like itself better direct user requests to content servers near a user's geographic location, something which was difficult without the additional information being provided in the DNS enhancements.
