Emulex Announces Next Generation Embedded Switch

Costa Mesa-based Emulex, the maker of storage area networking hardware, said Tuesday that it has rolled out its next generation, embedded storage switch, its Inspeed Switch on Chip (SOC) 442. The firm's switch is used by storage array manufacturers for connecting disk drives to RAID and storage controllers. Emulex said the new switch is its fifth generation of chip, and comes after it has shipped more than 58 million ports of its InSpeed embedded switch ports. Emulex--avoided a crowded storage switch market for storage-to-server connections--had early on in the market focused in switching designs on connecting data storage array controllers to back end switches. In the newest design, Emulex said it now supports 6Gb/s SAS, 6Gb/s Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) and 4Gb/s Fibre Channel connections.
