FTC Settles With P2P File Sharing Operator

The Federal Trade Commission is reporting that it has settled with a Los Angeles-based operator of a P2P file sharing site, over charges that he duped customers into buying memberships on his web site. The FTC said that Cashier Myricks, who claimed that his Web site would allow users of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs to transfer copyright materials without violating the law, settled with the FTC, and will refund more than $15,000 to the customers he duped into buying memberships. The settlement bars the misrepresentations in connection with the sale, advertising or use of any P2P file-sharing program tutorial or referral service or computer software program by Myricks. The FTC had filed suit in September over false claims on the web site.
