QUALCOMM, NEC Show Location Based Services Interoperability

San Diego-based QUALCOMM and NEC said that the two companies have successfully tested assisted-GPS (A-GPS) in Japan, an emerging standard for providing GPS location-based information via QUALCOMM's 3G WCDMA mobile protocols. The companies said that they tested protocol and newtork connectivity with Secure User Plane for Location (SUPL), a protocol which allows handsets to communicate with a location server. The technology is expected to be incorporated into QUALCOMM's broad line of mobile chipsets. Location-based services are an emerging category of mobile application which uses GPS information from a subscriber's mobile phone to link them to geographically-relevant information.
