Group Claims Blu-ray Better Than HD-DVD

The Blu-ray Disc Association is claiming this morning that consumers prefer the next generation DVD format over the competing HD-DVD format, after commissioning a poll of consumers. The group claims that consumers were given a side-by-side comparison of the two formats, with 58% of 1200 consumers preferring Blu-ray over HD-DVD. The group claimed that consumers preferred Blue-ray because of the ability to play the discs in more consumer electronic devices, personal computers and gaming consoles, backward compatibility with current DVD media, disc capacity and the ability to record large amounts of high-definition or standard definition video and data. The poll was conducted by Penn, Schoen, and Berland Associates. Blu-ray is locked in a heated battle with HD-DVD to determine who will survive as the next generation DVD format. Blu-ray is supported by Walt Disney, Miramax, MGM, ESPN, Sony Pictures, and consumer electronics firms Sony, Hitachi, Sharp, Panasonic, Dell, and HP. HD-DVD is supported by Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros.
