Thomson Rolls Out Digital Cinema

Thomson announced today that it is deplying a major rollout of digital cinema technology, having reached agreements with DreamWorks, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. to deploy digital cinema systems to 5000 screens in the US and Canada. The provider of theater equipment said that it eventually plans to deploy its systems to 15,000 screens. The agreement calls for the studios to distribute their content digitally and pay Thomson a virtual print fee for distribution. The Technicolor Digital Cinema rollout will begin in early 2006. Technicolor said that it estimates the total cost of an installed digital cinema systems is in the $90,000 to $100,000 range per screen.
