San Diego Teen Wins Siemens Westinghouse Prize

A San Diego teenager was the winner of the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse math and science competition. Michael Viscardi, a home schooled senior, won a $100,000 scholarship as the Grand Prize winner of the premier science competition. The annual prize provides nearly $2M a year to recognize high school students in the area of math and science, and is judged by a panel of scientists from leading research universities. Viscardi's project, entitled On the Solution of the Dirichlet Problem with Rational Boundary Data, focused on the area of mathematics and complex analysis. His research showed solutions to the Dirichlet problem are rational functions and can be implemented via computer. He was mentored by Professor Peter Ebenfelt, Department of Mathematics, University of California, San Diego.
