SIPphone Offers Free Landline Numbers

San Diego-based SIPphone, the voice-over-IP firm that leverages the open source Gizmo project to provide VOIP connectivity, said today that it will start offering free, U.S. telephone numbers for any computer. The firm said that the service would offer voicemail and call screening for free in the 775 area code, and also offer a $3.95 per month plan for phone numbers in other U.S. area codes. The company's services are available at area775.com. The services are very similar to ones offered by Santa Barbara-based CallWave, which also offers Internet-based call screening and 775 area code access.
