Qualcomm Ships Mobile App For Finding "Dead Cell Zones"

San Diego-based Qualcomm said Thursday afternoon that it has shipped a new application for remotely capturing GPS data from handsets, which can be used to find "dead cell zones"--spots in a carrier's network with cell phone coverage issues. According to Qualcomm, its MobileView software application remotely captures diagnostic data from mobile handsets with GPS capability. The new application uses data from a carrier's subscribers to help network operators find network issues; for example, identifying areas where there is poor coverage. According to Qualcomm, the new MobileView app can help capture information in residential and indoor locations, which are not covered by carrier drive-by testing. Qualcomm said that the new application is being used by CDMA2000 and WCDMA network operators, including T-Mobile Germany.
