SoCal Edison Hits One Million Smart Meters Installed

Southern California Edison said Monday that it has installed its one millionth smart meter, eleven months after the firm started installing the meters in its territory. The electric utility said that it started installing smart meters starting in September 2009, with a plan to install five million smart meters for both residential and small business customers by the end of 2012. Edison--like many other utilities--is pushing smart meter installs to provide customers with more information about energy usage, potentially resulting in lower electrical bills, to reduce peak demand on their systems, and stave of the need for additional power plants. The utility says it hopes to reduce demand on the grid by about 1,000 megawatts through the installation of the meters.
