What Mattered in 2012: Rory Moore, CommNexus

For the last week of the year, we're featuring the thoughts and reflections of some of the movers and shakers of Southern California's high tech community. We asked the same four questions of a variety of top technology entrepreneurs, investors, and others, to hear what they're thinking about, and are sharing it here over the next week.

Today, we're featuring Rory Moore, CEO of CommNexus in San Diego, the non-profit technology industry association that works to accelerate the formation, growth, and success of the technology industry in San Diego, and co-founder of Peregrine Semiconductor and Silicon Wave.

What was the biggest news for you/your firm this year?

Peregrine Semiconductor, a semiconductor company I co-founded in 1990, became a publically traded company on NASDAQ on August 8th. On Nov 27th I participated in ringing opening bell at NASDAQ in NY.

Biggest new for CommNexus / EvoNexus: EvoNexus incubator companies reached the $95M in capital raised and two companies were acquired.

2. In your opinion, what events, companies, or people made the biggest impact on the technology world this year?

Dr. Paul Jacobs leading Qualcomm to be the most valuable (by market cap) chip company in the world and their reference designs and chip sets being a key contributor rolling out true wireless broadband throughout most of the US.

3. What was the biggest lesson you learned over the past year (good or bad)?

Lots of little ones. Don’t believe there is ever one big one. Little ones matter.

4. What are the technologies, companies, or things we ought to watch in 2013?

Emerging companies in Life Science IT as healthcare moves to the cloud and becomes truly untethered. Startups will lead and the whales will follow.
