WD Debuts Streaming Media Player

Irvine-based WD has debuted a new streaming video player today, called the WD TV Play. Western Digital said that its new product streams popular Internet channels from YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, and other services, in addition to streaming a user's own personal photos, music, and video. WD says its new product starts at a MSRP of $69.99, and provides full HD 1080p video streaming, and connects to the Internet using high speed wireless of Ethernet; the device also includes free iPhone and Android apps to remotely control the box.

WD said its new device lets users also play content on any computer or network attached storage device which supports a DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) server; it can also play videos directly from a USB drive, connected digital camcorder, or camera. WD's new device will appeal to users who might not have a smart, Internet connected television, and would like to add those kinds of features to their HDTV.
