Vitesse Debuts New Gigabit Ethernet Cores

Camarillo-based Vitesse Semiconductor, the developer of packet processing and networking chips, said this week that it has debuted a new set of Gigabit Ethernet (GE) IP cores. The firm said the cores allow customers to integrate Gigabit switch functionality into Ethernet ICs. The company said it is aiming at consumer electronics, gaming, printers, smart grid, industrial and other applications with the new cores. Semiconductor cores can be incorporated into other chip designs by companies, and are typically used so that those firms do not have to develop their designs for including functionality in ASICs, FPGA, and other designs. Vitesse said the chips are available in two versions, one with GE switch functionality only, and the other also supporting Audio Video Bridging (AVB) including the IEEE 802.1AS-2011 timing and synchronization protocol.
