Qualcomm, Timex Team On New Smartphone Watch

Tired of clunky, half-functional smart watches? San Diego-based Qualcomm and watch company Timex have just rolled out a new, smart-watch which features direct connectivity to wireless networks--without requiring another smartphone. According to Timex, its new TIMEX IRONMAN ONE GPS+ smartwatch was co-developed with Qualcomm and AT&T, and offers up stand alone wireless connection without the need for another phone; supports email; lets users share their location with friends and family; and emergency location messaging. The watch also includes wearable features like tracking of speed, distance, and pace--with ability to share that through social services, not to mention a touch display and even a built in MP3 player. Timex said the new watch was developed in a collaboration with Qualcom Connected Experiences, Inc. The smart watch looks to be the first which does not require a Bluetooth connection to another smartphone to operate, a big limitation of existing products.
