Xirrus Acquired By Riverbed

Thousand Oaks-based wireless networking equipment maker Xirrus has been acquired by Riverbed, to help bolster its SD WAN efforts, the two said on Wednesday. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. Riverbed said it will continue to offer up Xirrus as a stand-alone enterprise WLAN solution. Xirrus makes high density wireless access points, which were specifically aimed at corporate campuses and other environments with a large number of wireless users. The company had counted Microsoft, University of Mississippi, Liverpool Football Club and Paul Hastings Law Firm as major customers. The acquisition comes just over 12 years after Xirrus was founded by Dirk Gates in 2005. Xirrus had raised funding from August Capital, Canaan Partners, Interwest Partners, QuestMark Partners, and US Venture Partners, although the company has been mum on recent funding; it's unclear what the equity structure of the firm was as of the acquisition. Xirrus appears to be one of the last companies to be acquired from the boom of high speed networking hardware along the 101 Corridor starting in the late 90's; earlier this month, Ixia was acquired by Keysight Technologies, and last year, Vitesse Semiconductor was acquired by Microsemi.
