HomeHero Shifts To W-2 Workers, Focuses On Enterprise

Santa Monica-based HomeHero, which operates an online marketplace for finding in-home care for seniors, said today that it is shifting its care providers from independent contractors to W-2 employees. According to HomeHero, it will use the shift to create a new platform called the HomeHero Collaborative, which it says will help provide hospitals and health plans with finding care providers. The company did not say what drove its shift to W-2 employes, however, marketplace companies have faced some steep legal battles over their use of independent contractors and proper status of those contractors. In conjunction with the shift, the company said it has hired Gordon Glasgow, MD as Chief Medical Officer, and Susan Condie, PhD, MSN as Chief Nursing Officer of the company as part of an enterprise push for the company, and also launched a new HIPAA-compliance iOS app which helps families find, hire, and remotely manage care for loved ones which ties into health systems. HomeHero raised $20M in its Series A back in June from Graham Holding Company, Social+Capital Partnership, Tencent Holdings Limited and The Launch Fund.
