Iomega Touts Patents in Nanotech, Digital Storage
San Diego-based Iomega said yetserday that it has received two new patents in the area of nanotechnology and external storage media. The first patent covers nanotechnology-based subwavelength optical data storage, used for encoding data onto the surface of a DVD. The company said that the AO-DVD (Articulated Optical - Digital Versatile Disc), technology could be used to hold 40-100 times more information that current DVDs at similar low costs, and that it is looking at the commercial feasibility of the format. Iomega also said that it has received a patent for an interchangeable cartridge data storage system, the basis for its many mobile data storage products. The two patents bring to a total more than 530 issued patentes worldwide.
