Twentieth Century Fox said this morning that the studio will support the new, next generation Blu-ray Disc Format by releasing new film, TV programming, and other titles through its Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment unit. The studio said that it will begin releasing content when Blu-ray hardware launches in North America, Japan, and Europe. Fox said that it is supporting the standard because of backward compatibility with existing home entertainment libraries as well as aggressive intellectual property protection in the new format. The endorsement of Blu-ray puts another movie studio on the side of the Blu-ray Disc format, which is struggling against HD-DVD as the next generation DVD format. Blu-ray is also supported by Walt Disney, Miramax, and Sony, along with other firms. HD-DVD is being promoted by Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros.
