Interview with Philip Lavee, MediaWorks
Irvine-based MediaWorks recently introduced a new MPEG4 chip and announced the launch of the company. I spoke with Philip Lavee, VP of Marketing and Sales at the company, to get an idea of what the company is working on, and some of its background. UCSD Initiative Forms Storage Advisory Board
The Information Storage Industry Center (www.storagenetworking.org), a UCSD-based initiative to address data storage technology and education, announced it has formed an industry advisory board made up of members from IBM, EMC, Veritas, HP, as well as other members of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). The new non-profit organization will work on education of data storage technology users and create local user groups of IT professionals.

Canoga Perkins Installs SAN Extension
Chatsworth-based Canoga Perkins (www.canoga.com) announced that its long distance optical network systems have been used to extend a storage network in South Africa. The company's system is providing Fibre Channel, ESCON, and FICON communications over a distance of 30 Km for a bank.

Captiva Licenses Text Categorization Software
San Diego-based Captiva Software (www.captivasoftware.com) has licensed software from Autonomy to provide advanced text categorization capability to its automated classification and routing systems. Captiva provides classification and routing for digitized images of mail and electronic communications.

Congress Tackles Offshore Outsourcing
Congress is targeting offshore outsourcing with a new bill, supported by 50 co-sponsors from both parties, aimed at cutting government funds for companies which fail to protect American jobs. The bill is designed to bar U.S. companies from receiving such things as Import/Export guarantees and trade financing and loans, especially if those companies are cutting US staff while bolstering offshore employees.
