Camarillo-based Power-One (www.power-one.com) has appointed Bill Franciscovich as EVP Sales. Franciscovich was most recently at IDT, and has also served at Motorola. Power One develops power supplies and converters for electronics and other industries.

Mindspeed Gets Switch Win
Newport Beach-based Mindspeed Technologies (www.mindspeed.com) announced that Harbour Networks is using the company's traffic stream processor semiconductor solution. China-based Harbour will use Mindspeed's chips in the company's Bighammer 6800 backbone intelligent multi-layer switch.

Qualstar Ships WORM Drives
Simi Valley-based Qualstar (www.qualstar.com) announced it is shipping tape libraries equipped with Sony SAIT-1 write once, read many tape drives. The company's TLS-5000 Series libraries support storing up to 132 terabytes of data in the SAIT format, which holds up to 500 gigabytes per tape.

BlackBall Adds Shugart As Chair
San Diego-based BlackBall (www.blackball.us) announced that it has added Al Shugart as chairman of the board of directors. Co-Founder Bob Brown will continue as CEO. Shugart was previously on the board. The company is developing rich media file storage solutions, also known as digital asset management solutions.

San Diego-based Entropic Communications has hired Michael Economy as VP Worldwide Sales. Economy joins from Trident Microsystems. Entropic is developing chipsets for networking video and data into the home, and has raised $46M from CMEA, Mission Ventures, Redpoint, Cisco, Intel, and other strategic investors.

Akonix Acquires Instant Messaging Provider
San Diego-based Akonix Systems has acquired Natural Messaging Inc, a provider of instant messaging applications for enterprises. Akonix is developing security solutions for enterprise instant messaging (IM). Akonix is backed by Menlo Ventures, Mission Ventures, Palomar Ventures, and windward Ventures. Terms were not disclosed.

Intouch Health Gets $6.7M B
Santa Barbara-based Intouch Health has received $6.7M in a series B led by Acacia Venture Partners. The company is developing remote presence technology for healthcare providers. Existing investors InvestCare Partners and Twenty One East Victoria Investments also participated. David Heer of Acacia Venture Partners has joined the board.
