Ricoh Buys Hitachi Printing
Ricoh announced it has purchased Hitachi Printing Solutions Ltd. Terms were not disclosed. Hitachi's US unit, Hitachi Printing Solutions America(www.hitachi-printingsolutions.us), is based in Simi Valley. Hitachi PRS develops high-speed printers and low-end color laser printers.

Westlake Village-based 5Square Systems has raised $12.3M from Norwest Venture Partners and Storm Ventures. 5Square provides Internet-based systems for managing automobile sales, and is headed by former Access360 Chair and CEO Yuri Pickover.

Salmedix Lands $45M C
San Diego-based Salmedix has raised $45M in Series C financing in a round led by HIG Ventures, with new investors including Orbimed Advisors, Easton Hunt Capital Partners, Hunt Ventures, Novo A/S, Quilvest Capital and Clariden Bank joining its existing investors. Salmedix is developing oncology drugs with an initial focus on hematologic cancers.

California Ranks Two In Technology Study
The latest release of Santa Monica-based the Milken Institute Index finds California now ranks number two in the states in the best position to take advantage of the knowledge-based economy, up from third from the 2002 Index. Massachusetts continued to lead the index, with the biggest drop in Texas, which went from 14th to 23rd in the nation. Rhode Island had the biggest gain, moving from 21st in 2002 to 11th this year.
