IMC Adds Media Converter Line
Foothill Ranch-based IMC Networks (www.imcnetworks.com) has added a new line of media converters for LAN and MANs. The company has added converters for aggregating and transmitting 10/100 Ethernet over distances of 80Km. The products allow multiple devices to be made available over fiber optic cabling.

SmartSound Expands Distributors
Northridge-based SmartSound Software (www.smartsound.com) announced that it has inked deals with two distributors here in the U.S. WYNIT, a digital imaging distributor, and D&H Distributing, a wholesale distributor of microcomputer products, will both offer SmartSound's products. SmartSound develops soundtrack creation products designed for corporate video and high-end film and video production.

Iomega Ups Removable Storage Ante
In a bid to regain the company's edge in removable storage, San Diego-based Iomega (www.iomega.com) has announced a new high capacity removable hard drive which provides 35GB of capacity on a drive smaller than a deck of playing cards. The company is targeting the new drive at desktop and server backups, where users have used previously used tape and CDRW backup solutions. AMCC Buys PowerPC Assets
San Diego-based AMCC (www.amcc.com) has acquired the assets of IBM's PowerpC 400 RISC processors, according to the companies. The deal calls for IBM to manufacture the processors for AMCC, and for AMCC to handle all sales for the processor line. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

San Diego Ranks in Global Knowledge Economy
A UK-based research firm has released its annual competitive index of global knowledge regions, and has ranked San Diego as fifth in its list of 125 regions. San Francisco ranked first, and the first non-US entry on the list is Stockholm at No. 15. Robert Huggins Associates ranks regions by the number of patent registrations, R&D, education spending, IT and communications infrastructure, as well as access to private equity and other factors.

Angels Launch New Early Stage Fund
Three Tech Coast Angels members--Ben Barak, Andrea Sloan Pink and John Kensey--have started a new venture fund focused on early stage investments. Seraphim Fund I has raised $3M in commitments so far for investments in Southern California companies, and will invest closely alongside the Tech Coast Angels.
