San Diego-based Bakbone (www.bakbone.com) has signed medical claim management service athenahealth as a customer. athenahealth is now using BakBone's backup and recovery solution for the company's backup process to disk.

Novastor Expands Management Team
Simi Valley-based NovaStor (www.novastor.com) has expanded its management team with two new appointments. Shaun Walsh will join as COO, and will oversee sales, marketing, and engineering support. Kelly Williams will become Director of Corporate Communications. Walsh was most recently VP and GM of JNI Corp., where he was responsible for JNI's Infiniband, iSCSI, and emerging technology business. Irvine-based Client Dynamics has named David Lee as CEO. Lee was the company's president. Client Dynamics develops software for managing sales relationships. Lee has also been an executive at Compuware, NetManage, Island Data, and Zkey.com.

Targus Ships DVD RW Drive
Anaheim-based Targus (www.targus.com) has released a new USB 2.0 Rewriteable DVD RW external drive. The new drive is designed for mobile professionals, weights less than a pound, and draws power directly from the USB bush. The company also said that the drive will be bundled with the popular Nero 6.0 CD/DVD burning software.

Akonix Receives Enterprise Win
San Diego-based Akonix (www.akonix.com) announced that Truman Arnold Companies has tapped the company for its enterprise-wide instant messaging security solution. Truman will implement the Akonix L7 Enterprise gateway, in order to allow employees to use instant messaging (IM) to communicate with co-workers, customers, and partners. Ulead, Alienware Partner On Video Software
Torrance-based Ulead Systems (www.ulead.com) and Alienware have partnered to offer Ulead's StudioQuartet professional video production software on all of Alienware's high performance workstations. Alienware customers will be able to order workstations with Ulead's video editing, DVD authoring, 3D animation, and photo enhancement tools. Ulead develops software for video, imaging, and DVD authoring and has a number of bundling deals with hardware manufacturers.

Accruent Raises $12M
Santa Monica-based Accruent has raised $12M for its contract management software solutions. The funding came from Granite Global Ventures, Sierra Ventures, Pequot Ventures, Innocal, Red Rock Ventures, Peninsula Equity Partners, and Constellation Ventures. The round of funding brings the total raised by Accruent to more than $35M. The company said the funding would be used to expand product development, sales, and marketing.

Geico Sues Overture, Google On Trademarks
Insurance firm Geico has sued Pasadena-based Overture Services (www.overture.com) and search engine Google over the use of its trademarks in sponsored search results, reports CNET. Geico claims the two have infringed on its trademark rights and have caused confusion in the marketplace. Geico is looking for damages and is seeking and injunction against the two company's use of its trademarks in its search engine advertising.
