Sorrento, Calient Networks Partner
San Diego-based Sorrento Networks (www.sorrentonet.com) and Calient Networks have partnered in a product and marketing agreement. According to the companies, Sorrento has integrated Calient's photonic switch and GMPLS control plane into Sorrento's DWDM transport system. The combination helps provide better optical switching and transport for on-demand, end to end circuit provisioning, among other benefits. Sorrento provides high performance metro and regional WDM transport systems.

eEye Upgrades Network Security Tool
Aliso Viejo-based eEye (www.eeye.com) Digital Security announced that it has upgraded the company's Retina Network Security Scanner tool. The company's tool helps administrators identify security vulnerabilities in enterprise networks. The upgraded tools offers unlimited asset discovery, imrpvoed reporting and OS detection, and a new user interface. eEye is backed by Bessemer Venture Partners and Insight Venture Partners, and recently announced a $15M funding round.

ZyXEL Upgrades Internet Security Appliances
Anaheim-based ZyXEL Communications has added new Internet Security Appliances to its lineup. The ZyWALL 5 and ZyWALL 35 are targeted at SOHO and SMB users, and provide integrated firewall, VPN, DMZ, content filtering, and optional 802.11b/g wireless connectivity. The two different models offer differing capacity for connections, and number of WAN ports.

HeyAnita Creates Rapid Messaging Service
Los Angeles-based HeyAnita (www.heyanita.com) said that it has unveiled a commercial version of its Rapid Message Service software, a new voice-based service which replaces text with spoken voice. The company's software acts much like voicemail, however sends a text message to a subscriber telling them a voice message is available to them. Napster Signs Broadband Service Deal
Los Angeles-based Napster's UK division has signed a deal with ntl Incorporated, a provider of broadband services in the UK, according to the companies. ntl will bundle the Napster subscription service with its broadband customers, giving its customers access to Napster's online music catalog. Broadcom, MicroTune Settle Patent Dispute
Irvine-based Broadcom (www.broadcom.com) and Texas-based Microtune announced that the two companies have settled a long running patent and antitrust dispute over analog processing components. The two companies agreed to drop all litigation, and cross-license their patents. According to a Microtune SEC filing, Broadcom paid $22.5M to Microtune to settle the case, and will pay royalties on Microtune's dual conversion tuner products.

Idun Finds $27M
San Diego-based Idun Pharmaceuticals announced it has raised $27M in a first closing of a $65.6M funding. The funding came from MPM Capital, Sutter Hill Ventures, Prospect Venture Partners, Pacific Rim Ventures, and Aberdare Ventures, in addition to its existing investors GeneChem, Venrock Associates, Hambrecht & Quist Capital Management, RBC Capital Partners, BioVeda Capital and Ventana Capital Management.
