Linksys Extends Wireless Reach
Irvine-based Linksys, the divison of Cisco, announced yesterday that it is shipping new high gain antennas for its wireless products. The new antenna solutions work with Linksys wireless adapters, bridges, and routers, and require no new drivers or modifications to work. The company said that the new products were designed to address home and small business needs for better wireless connectivity.

LA Moves to Regulate Cyber Cafes
The Los Angeles City Council has approved an ordinance restricting cyber cafes and requiring special security rules for those businesses. The move was in response to a shooting at a San Fernando Valley cyber cafe. According to the motion considered by the City Council, the number of violent incidents at cyber cafes and the focus of the cafes on violent online video games made it necessary to require a police permit, security cameras and limited hours for minors. Qualcomm in Atmel Deal
San Diego-based Qualcomm (www.qualcomm.com) has tapped Atmel Corp. in a product and foundry deal, according to the Silicon Strategies newsletter. Atmel will reportedly make a RF transceiver line for Qualcomm, adding the chip design firm to the list of foundry partners. Qualcomm also uses IBM, Freescale Semiconductor, and TSMC for chip manufacturing.
