Novatel, Lucent in UK 3G Networks
San Diego-based Novatel Wireless has been tapped to supply 3G wireless network connectivity cards by UK-based O2. The third generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UTMS) wireless PC Card modems, which were co-designed by Novatel and Lucent Technologies, will support O2's commercial 3G launch in the UK. O2 had previously announced that it would use the company's cards in its German 3G rollout.

Ulead Photo Software Goes To Disneyland
Torrance-based Ulead and Disney Interactive have announced a new software product based on Ulead's DVD PictureShow software. Disney's Magic Artist brand software will feature Ulead DVD PictureShow coupled with Disney characters, allowing families to create Video CD slideshows with a Disney theme. According to the companies, the software will feature Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella characters as well as Disney-themed special effects, text, and music.

TransDimension Ships New USB Chip
Irvine-based TransDimension has shipped a new single-chip, USB controller, which the company said is the industry's first single-chip solution. The new product, the TD1120, supports full speed USB host and peripherals, a capability which previously required two separate components to implement. TransDimension develops chips and software for enabling USB connectivity for manufacturers.

FrontBridge Signs ATI
Marina Del Rey-based FrontBridge Technologies announced that it has signed ATI Technologies as a customer for its email management and security services. ATI will use FrontBridge to filter spam and viruses from its corporate network, before those messages make it to ATI's corporate network. FrontBridge operates a managed service for corporations who want to outsource the management of spam and virus scanning of email. The company says that it has more than 2200 enterprise customers.

Iomega Enhances Desktop Hard Drive Line
San Diego-based Iomega announced this morning that it has introduced a sweeping redesign of its Iomega external hard drive line. The company has added a stackable design, the ability to vertically place drives, security slot, and more. The drives will be based on 7200 rpm drive technology and support USB 2.0, dual USB 2.0 and FireWire 400, and triple USB, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800. The drives offer a range of capacities and are bundled with various backup and recovery tools.

Linksys Teams With Verizon, Best Buy, Intel
Cisco's Irvine-based Linksys division has announced new relationships with a number of other companies. Linksys said that it has signed an agreement with Verizon to include the company's VoIP phones in its services. Verizon will offer Linksys phone adapters for its new VoiceWing VoIP service, which allows Verizon customers to make low cost calls over the broadband connections. Researchers To Build Ocean Internet
Researchers at the University of Washington and at UC San Diego have been tapped by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop cyberinfrastructure to link the research institutions with offshore ocean observatories. The $3.9M award over four years calls for designing and connecting undersea sensor networks throughout the west coast of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
