Applied DNA Sciences Names COO
Los Angeles-based Applied DNA Sciences announced that it has added Karin Klemm as COO. Klemm joins the company from Robert Half International. Applied DNA sciences is developing technology for DNA-based security solutions, for embedding in inks, microchips, paper, and other products.

SmartSound Inks Deal With Avid
Northridge-based SmartSound said today that it has inked a deal with Avid Technology to include SmartSound's Soniocfire Pro software in its educational classes. Avid's educational courses will include an introduction to the use of SmartSound's software, which allows filmmaker, broadcasters, and other A/V editors to easily score music into their productions. SmartSound's software includes a library of soundtracks for creating the right mood for video productions.

Farstone Appoints VP
Irvine-based FarStone Technology has appointed Thomas Fedro as VP Sales and Marketing. The company, which develops and publishes software solutions for digital content security and replication, said that Fedro will head the day to day operations of the company's global sales and marketing. Fedro joins from Fidelity National Financial, and also served at Micro General Corporation.

DivX Ships In Media Player
San Diego-based DivX has scored another win with its DivX video decompression technology, this time with NH Japan. NH Japan's MPM-200 portable media player series will include the ability to decode DivX video streams. The media players include a 3.5 inch LCD screen, S-Video, and coax outputs with the ability to record TV content directly to the devices. DivX has been licensing its technology to manufacturers, hoping to make its video format the standard for video compression/decompression.

Halozyme Raises $13.9M
San Diego-based Halozyme Therapeutics announced that it has received $13.9M in a private placement. The company, which is listed on the OTC bulletin board, did not disclose the investors in the PIPE. The placement agent was SG Cowen & Co. The company is backed by Cimarron Biomedical, Colt Ventures, Grove Capital, and Richie Capital, among others. Halozyme is developing and commercializing recombinant human enzymes for infertility, opthalmology, and oncology.

Napster Featured in Microsoft Windows XP
Los Angeles-based music download service Napster said yesterday that it will be featured in Microsoft's just announced Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Napster's digital music download service will be a featured service of the new software, which is Microsoft's foray into living room entertainment. Microsoft just launched the software, which is similar to other versions of Windows but adds a separate remote control interface for accessing digital music, video, and other online media. Qualcomm Buys Mobile UI Firm For $36M
San Diego-based Qualcomm has made another acquisition, this time of UK-based Trigenix, a provider of mobile phone user interfaces. The acquisition was worth approximately $36M in cash. Qualcomm said that it will use the Trigenix User Interface (UI) technology to extend the company's BREW client software for the European wireless community.
