Social Networking For The College Set
San Diego-based Financialaid.com announced that it has launched a new web site, targeted at networking and connecting current and prospective college students and alumni. The new site, CampusClix.com, looks to be the latest twist on social networking, which has spawned dozens of specialized social networking sites. Archos Ships New Digital Audio Player
Irvine-based Archos (www.archos.com) has added another digital audio player to its lineup. According to the company, its new Gmini XS200 provides 20GB of digital audio in a very small package (2.9 inches x 2.3 inches x .7 inches), enough for 5000 digitally encoded music files. The new player supports MP3, WMA, and WAV music files, and is expected to be available at major retailers by the end of October. Philips, IFILM in Home Entertainment Partnership
Los Angeles-based IFILM (www.ifilm.com) and consumer electronics giant Philips said today that they are entering into a global partnership for home entertainment products. IFILM will provide content for Philips Streamium products, including films, music videos, movie trailers, and more. Philips new products will provide wireless access to PCs and Internet entertainment. Zinc Matrix Gets $9M
Santa Barbara-based Zinc Matrix Power has closed a $9M round of funding from OnPoint Technologies, Intel Capital, and existing angel investors. Zinc Matrix is developing battery technology based on rechargeable polymer-based alkaline batteries. The technology is expected to lead to better batteries for notebook computers. The company also said that it is in a deal with On Point, a VC fund arm of the U.S. Army, to develop applications for the Department of Defense.
