TransDimension Announced High Power USB Transceiver
Irvine-based TransDimension announced that it has shipped a new, high-current Vbus, full-speed USB transceiver. The new transceiver is designed to enable mobile devices such as cellular phones, PDAs, MP3 players, and digital cameras to connect between each other without the requirement for a PC providing USB power. The company's chips and software are used in embedded applications to add USB connectivity to devices.

Fulcrum Ships Networking Switch Set
Calabasas-based Fulcrum Microsystems announced that it has shipped a new, SPI-4.2 based system interconnect switch for multi-gigabit networking and storage systems. The company's FM1020 is targeted at applications such as packet processing in high density Ethernet I/O cards, and supports speeds of up to 10Gbps and beyond. ThinGap Lands $750K DARPA SBIR
Ventura-based ThinGap has landed a $750,000 DARPA contract for developing components for unmanned electric-drive vehicles. The Phase II Small Business Innovation Research Contract (SBIR II) focuses on developing an electric drive stator and armature for use in electric vehicles. The technology has the promise of a wheel hub-mounted motor assembly, eliminiating the weight of motors and a drive train in the vehicle, dramatically simplifying drive rains and increasing reliability. Emulex Designed Into NEC Blade Servers
Costa Mesa-based Emulex announced that its host bus adapters have been intergated into NEC Corporation's Express5800 family of blade servers. Emulex's dual-channel Thor Fibre Channel HBA will be integrated into the blade servers, starting with shipment this month in Japan. The high density, optimized rack mount blade servers will include a customized version of the Emulex LP10000 host bus adapters for connection into a storage area network.

eCOST Expands Into Travel, Sports
Torrance-based eCOST.com announced that it has opened two new online stores. The company's Travel Store will offer discounted travel and vacation bookings, including airlines, hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals, and cruises. The company also is selling licensed sports apparel and memorabilia in its new Licensed Sports Apparel store, which will offer products from professional and college sports teams at a discount.

US Tech Jobs Down, Offshore Hiring Surging
A recent report shows that the nation's technology job picture is continuing to undergo a sweeping transformation. Staffing firm Challenger, Gray, and Christmas has released a report that shows that US technology job cuts has accelerated greatly in the last quarter. The firm is reporting that job cuts in technology jumped between July and September to 54,701 layoffs reported, up from 34,213 layoffs the previous quarter.
